about the fire yesterday on haggle circle just off of route 1 in lorton, virginia. eileen armstrong is credited with saving her two young sons and infant daughter. but there was nothing anyone could do to save armstrong and two other sons trapped inside. >> couldn't do anything. we couldn't get in. >> reporter: armstrong's surviving children and their father are in the washington hospital center's burn unit. some of them have life- threatening injuries. >>> a maryland man is among the nine troops killed in tuesday's helicopter crash in southern afghanistan. brendan looney became a navy officer in 2004. he later completed seal training. he lived in silver spring and graduated from dematha high school in 1999. tuesday's crash was the deadliest since may of 2006. >>> today afghanistan's army welcomed the first batch of female officers in decades. 29 women graduated from the kabul army training center. afghanistan and alternate have been pushing to expand training to increase the country's security forces. the women spent six months training and will work doing administrative work and w

now. a few light showers in ohio and west virginia but around here generally clear. we could see 30s or 40s here. 60s and 70s across the board. 73 national. dew point in the 60s and a light wind out of the north at three miles an hour. nationally, we have some showers out in the rockies in the southwest. this moisture is feeding in to a developing storm system in the northern plains and once again rough weather ahead of this. showers and storms through wisconsin approaching chicago later on and could cause flight delays an that's a popular spot for folks to go through. the front operating milder air from the warm hot air will be lifting north of us. other than a possibility of a couple of storms this afternoon, we should have a lot less action than yesterday and then this front, this is coming on friday in to saturday morning. this will be our savior. cool us back down to the 80s on saturday an 70s on sunday. our seven-day forecast, 92 today. 94 tomorrow. isolated storm today. and look at this, monday, tuesday, wednesday, upper 70s to low 80s with a few much- needed showers. here's a

at stories making headlines this morning. a lorton, virginia, community mourning the loss of a young mother and two of her children. they were killed in a house fire yesterday. 24-year-old ally anderson was able to save three of her five kids by lowering them down to her uncle on the ground. >>> theresa lewis will be executed in virginia tonight. the first punishment of this type for a woman in the commonwealth in a century. she was sentenced to death for providing sex and money to two men who killed her husband and her stepson back in october of 2002. so far the governor has decided not to grant clemency. lewis is scheduled to be put to death by ion at 9:00 p.m. at a correctional facility in jarrett. >>> gray and michelle rhee scheduled to meet. it will be a closed discussion at city hall at noon today. gray has said that her future in the position would lie heavily based on this conversation today. >>> 7:16 right now. got some city business. now some business that all of us are going to want to listen to. >> hot and humid. we're going to have to open up the pools again. >> why do they shu

in virginia today about some important parts of health care reform that kick in tomorrow. >> number one, paul already mentioned, the issue of lifetime limits. that is not going to be the rule anymore after tomorrow. number two, pre-existing conditions for children. number three, we are going to make sure that if young people don't have health insurance through their employer, that they can stay on their parents' health insurance up the age of 26. number four, you're going to be able to choose your doctor and not have to go through some network in an emergency situation. >> well, apparently that is not all true. item two, health care could have aren't for children with pre-existing conditions has now hit a snag. some major health insurance companies have chosen to stop selling children-only policies in states like california, illinois, florida and connecticut. is there anything lawmakers can do to fix that snag? congresswoman loretta sanchez, democratic, california, joins us from capitol hill. congresswoman, you know, the biggest selling point to the middle class, it is fair to say, not just t

is there, outside of d.c., sterling, virginia, this morning. a lot of what's in the pledge seems to be classic republican ideas that we've heard for some time now, years, as a meat of fact, anything new in here? >> reporter: well, i think what's new and what's most interesting is the way that house republicans are trying to make the tea parties voters, especially understand that they are trying to listen to them. i think we have some examples of points that i saw were clear indications that they were trying to reach out. little things. for example, weekly votes on spending cuts. a pledge to cut congress's budget. a net hiring freeze of nonsecurity federal employees. and a vote on every regulation costing more than $100 million. those, each of those, is a nod to the idea that many in the base, you know, you hear republicans talking about this rebellion. rebellion is in large part about spending. so these are little things that the house republicans say they will try to do to address that. in addition to that there are some items in here that address the whole idea at that governme
